Conference administrators, pastors and departmental leaders of the conference teach the courses. Its mission is to make Christians evangelists.
To date more than one hundred students, from all eleven churches of the conference, have taken at least one course offered by W.A.V.E.S. Ten students from five churches have completed the program. Why not take your ministry and ultimately your relationship with God to the next level?
The W.A.V.E.S. program is an excellent opportunity to experience spiritual growth. It provides an encouraging environment where one can develop a greater appreciation for our God-given message and mission using various methods. All the sessions are Biblically based and Christ focused.
By Dr. Sydney Gibbons
When I considered leaving my post as Associate Professor in the Department of Religion and Theology, at Northern Caribbean University, in Mandeville, Jamaica, I asked God, what should I do in ministry, in Bermuda? I was born and raised in Bermuda where I also began my pastoral ministry. After leaving Bermuda for ten years, seven years serving as a missionary in Togo, Cameroon and Jamaica, I returned to Bermuda, in 2001. I had served as pastor of the majority of the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Bermuda. In addition, I had directed several ministry departments for the conference. What special contribution could I make in ministry on returning to my island home?
It was then, that I wrote the blueprint of the twelve-course curriculum, for the school of evangelism. This curriculum was adopted in November 2012 as the W.A.V.E.S. School of Evangelism for the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventist. Its mission is to make Christians evangelists. In May 2015, it was adapted as Lites Ministry – the school of evangelism designed to serve the world through its onsite and online training opportunities.
The curriculum was first piloted from 2005-2007. Twenty-five lay members, primarily from the Rockaway Seventh-day Adventist Church, Bermuda, began the journey. The twenty-one hour courses were taught on Sunday mornings. The length of each course was later reduced to twelve hours of interactive learning. The Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists established the program of study to provide evangelism training to its members. The twelve-course training program is delivered over two consecutive years and is repeated on a continuing basis. Members can enter the W.A.V.E.S. program with any course that is offered.
W.A.V.E.S. is an acronym for the values taught in the school:
W – Water of Salvation
A – All Nations for Christ
V – Victory in Jesus
E – Evangelism Training
S – Service to Humanity
Below are some of the feedback that previous students and instructors have given us:
I teach in the W.A.V.E.S. program, along with other pastors and leaders of the Bermuda Conference. The program is an integral part of church culture for the conference, to disciple members to give their best service for Jesus. It helps us accomplish our evangelistic mission through equipping believers to do the work of an evangelist.
Lites Ministry [Dr. Sydney Gibbons, founder] is a God-sized vision designed to train Christians to light the world with the Gospel. Its comprehensive and balanced curriculum will mature Christians as evangelists. The core of its curriculum is also taught in the W.A.V.E.S. School of Evangelism, for the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The three-volume Lites Ministry series will be used as the primary textbooks for the W.A.V.E.S. program.
Dr. Kenneth Manders, President, Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
In the Lites Ministry Curriculum he [Dr. Sydney Gibbons] has penned an effective tool designed to educate and engage Christians to advance in their ministries as evangelists for Christ. It is divinely inspiring, informative, and engaging. The theme of the Message, Mission and Method of Evangelism is portrayed throughout the series, and the text is suitable for both the academic as well as the layperson. Dr. Gibbons presents a compelling and unique program that can be used globally that will greatly encourage Christian members to a higher level of efficient and effective involvement in reaching individuals for Christ, and provides valuable insights into the methodology of evangelism. This book is recommended for every Christian who is serious about evangelism and preparing individuals for the soon coming of Jesus Christ.
Eloise Symonds, Personal Ministries Director, Associate Director, W.A.V.E.S., Bermuda Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
Why not take your ministry and ultimately your relationship with God to the next level? The W.A.V.E.S. program is an excellent opportunity to experience spiritual growth. It provides an encouraging environment where one can develop a greater appreciation for our God-given message and mission using various methods. I personally can say that all the sessions are Biblically based and Christ focused. There is plenty of dialogue and many opportunities to translate the theory into practice. From my perspective, the curriculum allows for each attendee to be engaged, interactive, inspired and transformed. Also the various church Pastors / Bible worker(s) are highly qualified as class facilitators. As a graduate, I actually enjoyed all the sessions and looked forward to each class. There is never a dull moment.
Reflecting on some of the sessions, we as a class grew in so many ways as a result of this God-sent WAVE ministry, which is freely shared. Together we pondered, meditated, laughed, cried, challenged, re-evaluated … it was amazing … Furthermore, it is a wonderful time to develop friendships and make a connection with church members from our sister churches. At times when I didn’t have transportation and the buses were not running on my route, I found a way to maintain my commitment to attend every class on time. I recommend that you sign up today. Don’t miss out; you will be blessed and in return bless others! You can be assured that you will be better equipped and empowered to minister on Christ’s behalf. What an experience to look forward to!
Angela Ackah Simons, W.A.V.E.S. Graduate July 2017, Hamilton Church
Since I have been …[in the] “Waves” [program] I have learned a lot. [I better] understood my Sabbath [School] lesson[s] – learning how to read between the lines; and how to dig into other books to understand what I am studying. Jesus has helped me a lot when I dig a little deeper into what I am studying. I am so thankful I joined the Wave[s] course[s]. I have been enjoying them and have learned so much. Thanks to all the Lord’s wonderful leaders!
Sandra P. Moniz, completed 10 of twelve courses, St. George’s Church
For me, the WAVES program provided a most comprehensive instructional and informative experience for personal spiritual growth and church mission. It has given me a new mindset in studying the Bible and new understanding of the application of the Spirit of Prophecy writings. The program inspired added confidence in my witnessing, studying with family and friends, going out into the community and my involvement in the Personal Ministries Department at Warwick SDA. In addition, it provided me the opportunity to participate as a Bible worker at some evangelistic meetings, which is a new venture for me. Because the classes are interactive they provide an opportunity to have clarified, any personal grey areas one may have concerning the Bible, the Spirit of Prophecy or the church and the functions of the General Conference. I might add, the presenters are very knowledgeable, informed and eager to answer questions. It is my opinion that like a blueprint is to a builder, so is the WAVES program to a growing Christian. Anyone who wants to solidify their Christian experience should seriously consider enrolling in the WAVES courses.
Millard Bean, W.A.V.E.S. Graduate December 2017, Warwick Church
It has been a pleasure, privilege, and blessing to be a part of the WAVES
School of Evangelism. Knowledge gained has enhanced my Christian walk, helped me to grow spiritually, and become mission-driven and focused. I now have the necessary tools for service and effective ministry. Thank you Pastor Gibbons…

One of the best things I have ever done for myself was attend the Bermuda School of Evangelism. The courses retaught by some of the best professionals one could find anywhere in the world. I genuinely commend Dr. Sydney Gibbons for taking the challenge to establish this School. Real learning began when I had to put what is taught in the classroom to use in practical, every day life. The classroom experiences have given me the opportunity to be open and genuine with others about the real issues of life from a Biblical perspective.
Ann Pitcher, W.A.V.E.S. Graduate January 2015, St. David’s Church
I have attended three of the Waves programmes;
A Brief History of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
Understanding Ellen G. White
Retention and Reclamation
These courses have been most enlightening for me as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. They have helped me to grow through understanding the Churches foundation. The Waves classes could be a good refresher for many members who may not realize some of the changes, which have taken place overtime, [in the life of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.]
Cynthia Burgess, Hamilton Church
Mrs. Symonds is a very patient teacher/listener.
The class taught me:
To pray daily and stay in the Word
How to find former members/old and present
How to help those who are grieving
How to find comfort in the scriptures
I am an ambassador for God
Thank you for the eye opener. I am hoping to use this lesson as a guide to Retention and Reclamation.
Barbara King Bean, Southampton Church
The class has taught me some great ideas of being available to others and reaching out to them. However it also highlighted that it is not about what I want to do for someone but what are their real needs and what they want me to do for them. It also reinforced previous inspirations from the Holy Spirit to mingle, come out of ones comfort zone and be available, share ones testimony and participate in ministry. When we go straight to telling people about God they may become defensive and think they are being judged.
The teacher was timely, accommodating and repetitive to facilitate learning. She was also knowledgeable and sharp with the presentations, resource material and answers.
Natanee Dolhouse, Seventh-day Adventist, Guest Worker in Bermuda
I have learned that I must be a disciple for Jesus Christ. And Matt. 28:19-20 says I must go, teach everyone, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Daily I must Pray, Read, Live and Share Jesus Christ. The Bible should be our main textbook at all times and be its own interpreter. Remember, the Waves program is FREE, FREE, FREE, for all members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Let us take advantage, before it is too late! Prayerfully studying the Word of God and the Spirit of Prophecy are encouraging, and to be shared between family, friends and neighbours, also [with] everyone in the World. Great videos, books and lots of materials are available online [to enhance learning through the Waves program]. A blessed Programme.! Thank you all, exceedingly!
